Zebra Mussels & Winterizing | Preparing and Cleaning Your Irrigation Systems & Boats for Winter

Boats:
  • Zebra mussels can and will damage your boat motor especially if your boat is stored on the water for long durations of time.
  • Zebra mussels, once inside your motor or attached to the lower unit of your motor, will grow into adults and block your motors water intake ports. This can lead to overheating or mechanical failure.  Keeping your outboard motor tilted up and out of the water when not in use is a recommended precaution.
  • If you are unable to lift your motor, a spring cleaning of your motor water intake is recommended to be sure your engine can cool itself.
  • For the mussels that attach to your boat hull or pontoon, power wash the craft and trailer at 140°F, flushing the motor and live wells, and allow time to dry prior to launching at Lakewood and upon winterization.
Irrigation Systems:
  • Start by visually examining the pump and its components for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Look for cracks, leaks, or rust that may indicate potential problems.
  • Check all electrical connections and hoses to ensure they are secure and free from damage. Loose or frayed wires can cause electrical issues, while damaged hoses can lead to leaks and reduced water flow.
  • Inspect the pump’s filters and intake screens for debris, such as leaves, dirt, and other particles. Clogged filters can restrict water flow and reduce the pump’s efficiency.
  • Turn off the pump and carefully remove any debris from the filters, intake screens, and other accessible parts. Use a soft brush or cloth to clean off dirt and grime gently.
  • Run clean water through the pump to flush out any remaining dirt or particles. This helps prevent clogs and improves overall performance.
  • Lubricate any moving parts, such as bearings and seals, as recommended by the manufacturer. Proper lubrication reduces friction and prolongs the life of the components.
  • Begin preparations for winter by gradually reducing the watering frequency as temperatures drop. This helps plants transition to dormancy.
  • Perform a thorough inspection and cleaning of the pump and irrigation system. Remove any accumulated debris and ensure all components are in good condition.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to winterize the pump. This may include draining the system, disconnecting hoses, and insulating the pump.

With the unfortunate discovery of the presence of Zebra Mussels in the Lakewood Lakes in the last few years, the best thing residents can do to combat further proliferation is to take the measures above and report to staff anyone bringing vessels or boats from outside of Lakewood into waters.
